Steak Worth Spending Your Paycheck On

Grub Street runs a New York Diet with La Frieda meat man Mark Pastore. A week in the man’s life reads like a virtual bucket list for any self respecting foodie, but as Eater NYpoints out, the real pro tip here is the distinction between two steak house greats: Minetta Tavern and Porter House New York. Says Pastore, “I always kind of judge: If they’re heavyset people, I bring them to Porterhouse, because the chairs are bigger. Fat people don’t like to go to Minetta because they get stuck in the corner.” With that in mind, we’ve crafted a list of the best restaurants for steak. [The Feast]

  • Minetta Tavern

113 MacDougal St. | (212) 254-9834Keith McNally’s redo of this classic Greenwich Village red-sauce joint installed a textbook French bistro menu, complete with expertly prepared dry-aged steaks. Go for broke and order the Cote de Boeuf.

  • Balthazar

80 Spring St. | (212) 965-1414If you’re looking for steak without the heft of a giant steak for two, head to the bar at this Soho standby for the steak tartare.

  • Peter Luger Steak House

178 Broadway | (718) 387-7400If you can get past the surly service and antiquated cash-only policy, there are few other experiences as quintessentially “New York” as a dinner here.

  • Strip House

13 East 12th Street | (212) 328-0000As far as clubby steakhouses go, Strip House ranks among the best. While the meat is excellent, don’t forget to order a healthy number of sides. We recommend getting a double order of the duck fat mashed potatoes.

  • Prime Meats

465 Court St. | (718) 254-0327Frank Falcinelli and Frank Castronovo of Frankies Spuntino leave their casual Italian comfort zone and try their hands at vaguely Germanic fare. The result: some excellent dry-aged steaks.

  • Keens Steakhouse

72 W. 36th Street | (212) 947-3636The restaurant has served excellent cuts of beef for over a hundred years, but the real attraction here doesn’t even come from a cow. Instead, lamb mutton chops take center stage.

  • Primehouse NY

381 Park Ave S | (212) 824-2600Owned and operated by the B.R. Guest restaurant group (Dos Caminos, Bill’s Bar & Burger), you’d expect the restaurant to have a distinctly corporate vibe. Instead, it’s one of the most comfortable spots to grab steak in the area. Head downstairs to check out the glass-enclosed dry-aging room.

  • Porter House New York

10 Columbus Circle, 4th Floor | (212) 823-9500There’s great steak to be had at Michael Lomonaco’s flagship restaurant in the Time Warner Center.

  • Sparks Steak House

210 East 46th St | (212) 687-4855This is old school, Midtown steakhouse dining at its finest.
