Whether you take five or take the F train, Jazz is set to become a regular fixture on the Lower East Side. Starting tonight, the Moldy Fig Jazz Bar at 178 Stanton Street(adjacent to Lady Gaga’s old digs) will be the curator, hosting nightly gigs and open jam sessions. This new venue, operated by Charles Brown of Fat Cat fame, is the latest addition to the vibrant local music scene. One that’s been in the making for more than a year.
Indeed, we first broke news in March 2010 that Moldy Fig would move into the storefront formerly occupied by. At the time, community response to the new performance space seemed fairly mixed, but CB3 ultimately greelighted a wine and beer license. Until recently, though, onsite work appeared fairly sparse, with the roll-down security gates locked most days. A blue neon sign, black awning, and teaser poster arrived back in January; there were also a few private soirees.
Fast forward to present day. Bar managers on hand this afternoon were kind enough to invite us to preview the Moldy Fig ahead of the soft opening later tonight. The space is deceivingly large – stepping off the street, the visitor is almost naturally pulled toward the rear stage toward the back – and the interior design is tasteful. Decor is composed of exposed brick, plush couches, band drawings, and age-of-flight ceiling fans. Patrons will also have access to a full-size shuffleboard, a range of board games, and foosball in the basement. A pool table is likely on the way, as well.
Official grand opening is actually July 4 when the full food menu will take effect. Until then, it’s just drinks, Jazz, and shuffleboard. No cover this weekend, then it gets bumped up to $5 at the door.
