Joan Holloway fans are one step closer to getting their hands on the Mad Men collection for Banana Republic.

The Rockefeller Center outpost of the chain store hosted a preview this morning, allowing for an up-close look at the line. If you’ve seen the lookbook, there aren’t too many surprises here: We found dresses with nipped-in waists certain to add some zing to your office-wear arsenal; separates including silk blouses, chic cropped trousers, waist-grazing blazers and cardigans; and a sprinkling of party dresses that successfully channel Betty Draper.

There are some notable standouts: Just about every woman who walked passed the leopard print trench, snatched it off the rack for a quick try-on. Lace tops and sheath dresses in classic black or cream hung on a few arms headed towards the fitted room.

The collection also features some ’60s-inspired accessories. Faux-skin clutches were a big hit with the morning’s shoppers, as were the strands of pearls in blush pink (coincidentally these necklaces were the first pieces to sell out on Gilt Groupe’s pre-sale three weeks ago).

Our only wish is that the Mad Men collection was merchandised a bit better. At the preview, we sometimes found ourselves wondering if the cardigan we were inspecting was part of the collection or simply part of BR’s main line. We were also hoping to see much more of the men’s offerings, especially since we’ve been obsessed with that midnight-blue shawl collar tuxedo ever since our friends at Thread NY walked us through the collection with creative director Simon Kneen. We’re still wondering if we could pull off that sleek tuxedo jacket in one of the smaller sizes. [The Feast]
